Wissenschaftler waren lange der Ansicht, dass Schmetterlinge taub seien, bis 1912 die ersten Schmetterlingsohren entdeckt wurden. Das Gehör der Schmetterlinge ist von Art zu Art unterschiedlich. Der blaue Morpho peleides beispielsweise hat, wie Kathleen Lucas von der Universität Bristol herausfand, die Ohren auf seinen Flügeln.

Listen to the sounds of nature: The British Library has a collection of → 268 nature recordings made in the first half of the 20th century. The recordings date back to the 1930s and include the songs of birds, noises made by large vertebrates like camels and panda bears, and even full-environment background sounds like this 1938 recording of an Afrotropical environment.

Es handelt sich bei der Locher-Wolke (engl. Hole Punch Cloud) um ein sehr seltenes Wetterphänomen, das eine kompakte Wolke mit bizarren Spitzen bezeichnet, die sich durch einen markant kreisförmigen oder ovalen Freiraum von den sie umgebenden Wolken – zumeist Cirruswolken – absetzt. Die genaue Ursache, die zu der Entstehung der Locher-Wolke führt, ist noch nicht erforscht. Es wird vermutet, dass sie durch schnell herabfallende Eiskristalle entsteht. Flugzeuge als Verursacher werden nicht ausgeschlossen.

Das Great Blue Hole ist eine unterseeische Doline vor der Küste von Belize. Das etwa 300 Meter durchmessende Loch liegt in der Nähe des Zentrums des Lighthouse-Riffs. Es ist in der Mitte 124 m tief, entstand am Ende der letzten Eiszeit vor etwa 65.000 Jahren und bildet einen Zugang zu einem unterirdischen Höhlensystem.

Volcano Tungurahua sometimes erupts spectacularly. Pictured above, molten rock so hot it glows visibly pours down the sides of the 5,000-meter high Tungurahua, while a cloud of dark ash is seen being ejected toward the left. Wispy white clouds flow around the lava-lit peak, while a star-lit sky shines in the distance. The above image was captured in 2006 as ash fell around the adventurous photographer. Located in Ecuador, Tungurahua has become active roughly every 90 years for the last 1,300 years.

The eggs incubate for over 6 months and until now the hatching process has never been witnessed. If you didn’t see it you wouldn’t believe it could fit in that egg!
