Eine ganz besondere Cenote im mexikanischen Dschungel (Der Begriff stammt von den Maya: Im Spanischen bezeichnet Cenote ein dolinenartiges Kalksteinloch, das durch den Einsturz einer Höhle entstanden und mit Süßwasser gefüllt ist. Eine 30 Meter tiefe Süßwassersäule hinab in die Tiefe, dann wird die Sicht neblig und, berichtet Cristina Limonta, “eine Landschaft wie bei Dante öffnet sich vor uns”:
A floating cloud made out of colors, which changes whenever the sun hides in the sky, is like a suspended island, decorated with branches and leaves fallen in times from the forest. As soon as we pass the 5 meters layer made of hydrogen sulfate, where the visibility is zero, we find ourselves submerged again in the clearness of sea water, which reaches 60 meters of depth where there is absolute no sun light. The different density of salty water doesn’t allowed the sulfate layer to reach the bottom of the cenote, forcing it to be eternally in between the two different waters.

Sarosh Jacob nimmt uns mit auf eine einzigartige Schwebetour im Jellyfish Lake auf der Insel Eli Malk im mikronesischen Archipel Palau:
“Twelve thousand years ago these jellyfish became trapped in a natural basin on the island when the ocean receded. With no predators amongst them for thousands of years, they evolved into a new species that lost most of their stinging ability as they no longer had to protect themselves. They are pretty much harmless to humans…
These fascinating creatures survive by sharing a symbiotic relationship with algae that live inside of them. At night, the jellyfish go down to the depths of the lake where the algae feed on nutrients. During the day, the jellyfish come back to the surface and follow the sun across the lake in a massive migration. The algae convert the energy of the sun via photosynthesis into a sugar that feeds the jellyfish.
It is not possible to scuba dive in this lake because the nutrient rich layer at around 50 feet and below contains hydrogen sulphide which is highly toxic to humans. If a scuba diver was to swim in that layer, the toxins would enter the body through the skin and that exposure could be fatal. Snorkeling however, is perfectly safe and if you ever find yourself in Palau one day, you should make your way to this special place.”

Im Jahr 2008 bestieg der Schweizer Alpinist Ueli Steck den Eiger innerhalb von nur 2 Stunden 47 Minuten über die schwierige und gefährliche Heckmair-Route. Der Rekord steht immer noch. Dieses Video von Stecks Aufstieg macht deutlich, warum seit 1935 auf dieser Route 65 Bergsteiger ihr Leben verloren haben:
Update: Der Rekord von Steck wurde am 20. April 2011 von dem Schweizer Alpinisten Daniel Arnold eingestellt. Der 27-Jährige durchstieg die Eiger-Nordwand solo in 2 Stunden 28 Minuten, 20 Minuten schneller als der bisherige Rekordhalter. (Dank für den Hinweis an Stefan Weichinger!)
